AMPATH Shares Successes at Kenya Medical Association Scientific Conference

AMPATH's care and research programs, including USAID AMPATH Uzima, USAID Dumisha Afya and USAID 4TheChild attended the Kenya Medical Association Scientific Conference in Mombasa County. AMPATH was a silver sponsor for the event which brought together healthcare teams from throughout the region.

Health stakeholders and practitioners deliberated on the impacts of climate change on health. The AMPATH team showcased many aspects of the partnership including work in HIV care, prevention and treatment including evidence that has informed care programs to underserved communities in Kenya and around the globe.   

Professor Winstone Nyandiko, co-director of research, presented the “AMPATH Research Program: A learning organization” during the first day of the conference. He discussed AMPATH’s research structure; the pillars of the partnership; the vision and the values of the AMPATH research program; the lessons, strengths, challenges, opportunities; and the evidence of success and impact.

Professor Sylvester Kimaiyo, chief of party for USAID AMPATH Uzima, presented “AMPATH Leading with Care” and emphasized the power of academic partnerships and how AMPATH had moved to from HIV care to comprehensive care that integrates non-communicable diseases. He discussed the support of USAID/PEPFAR and the ways in which AMPATH’s Research and Sponsored Projects Office (RSPO) and medical records system (AMRS) support AMPATH’s mission.

Dr. Festus Njuguna co-presented on behalf of a team from AMPATH and other partners on “Evaluating the Clinical Impact and Cost-Effectiveness of a Wireless Vital Sign Monitor for Hospitalized Newborns in Kenya.” Dr. Sarah Obuya Owino, consultant clinical radiation oncologist, also presented “MTRH-Health Research.”

Representatives from other program areas shared information with all attendees in the exhibit hall throughout the conference. The event coincided with the East Africa Medical Journal Centenary Celebration.
