Kenyan scholarship recipient meets donor family

Each year, through the Mwangaza Scholarship program, AMPATH is able to assist approximately 72 Kenyan medical students with their school fees. One such scholarship was created in memory of Angela Bowen-Boss. Angela, a 34-year-old pediatrician and child psychiatrist, died unexpectedly on September 4, 2011. Because of her strong ties to the AMPATH program, Angela's family created a scholarship in her name. The scholarship supports one Moi Univeristy medical student each year, allowing the student to focus on his or her schooling instead of worrying about how to pay for the fees.

 This year, the Angela Bowen-Boss Scholarship recipient and fourth year medicial student, Winnie Ndaka, was one of three Kenyan medical students that spent the summer in Indianapolis working at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital. While in the states, Winnie had the opportunity to meet the family that set up the Angela Bowen-Boss Scholarship: Frank Bowen Jr. (father), Frank Bowen III (brother), Winnie, Dr. Eric Boss (husband), and Landa Bowen (mother) are pictured here. It was a touching moment for all. Winnie says that because of the Angela Bowen-Boss Scholarship, she is on the verge of seeing her dream come true of becoming a physician and is looking forward to being able to give back to society.
