Mercy Oduor
A year ago, I embarked on a journey that I knew would challenge me, but I underestimated just how much it would transform me. The WomenLift Health Leadership Journey was not just a program—it was a call to step into my power, to lead with authenticity, and to uplift others as I rise. In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader; a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves.” Through this experience, I have come to understand that leadership is not about titles or positions; it is about impact, influence, and the courage to drive meaningful change.
My journey with WomenLift Health began through AMPATH’s Women in Leadership (WIL) program, which introduced me to this opportunity and reinforced the importance of empowering women leaders in global health. Over the past year, I have been privileged to be part of a network of strong, visionary women dedicated to advancing health leadership in Africa and beyond. It was particularly inspiring to see the official launch of the AMPATH WIL program, with the participation of Dr. Norah Akong’o Obudho, the East Africa WomenLift Health Director, and Dr. Jackline Kitulu, a WomenLift Health alumna, who continue to champion gender-inclusive leadership in health.
As I graduate and join the WomenLift Health alumnae network, I carry forward the vision of inclusive leadership, recognizing that gender equity in decision-making is not just a matter of fairness—it is fundamental to building resilient and effective health systems. Now more than ever, we need bold, visionary, and adaptive leaders who can navigate uncertainty, advocate for sustainable solutions, and strengthen health systems that are not just functional but vibrant, resilient, and antifragile.
To my AMPATH family, consortium leadership, and colleagues in global health, this journey has reinforced my belief that leadership is not a solitary path—it is a shared responsibility. Let us continue fostering environments where diverse voices are heard, leadership potential is nurtured, and collective action drives sustainable change. Together, we can shape the future of global health—one that is inclusive, equitable, and transformative.
