Cabinet Secretary for Health Inaugurates MTRH Board and Commends Hospital
The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Senator Mutahi Kagwe, EGH, inaugurated the new Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Board.

The Board is chaired by Mr. Sitoyo Lopokoiyit and includes: Mr. Alois Nderi & Madam Sharon Sang, Independent Directors; Dr. Michael Gichangi, Alternate-PS Health; Mr. Mark Lugwisa, Alternate CS-The National Treasury & Planning; Mr. James Muchiri, Alternate CS-State Department for University Education & Research; Prof. Tenge Kuremu, Principal, Moi University College of Health Sciences; Mr. George Ombua, representative, Inspectorate of State Corporations; and MTRH CEO Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, MBS, EBS.
The board members were inducted on Monday, November 29, at MTRH.
The cabinet secretary called on the Board to operate within the Constitution of Kenya; State Corporations Act; other relevant laws; the MTRH Board Order; Mwongozo Code of Corporate Governance for State Corporations and all relevant Government Circulars.
Speaking shortly after the inauguration, Sen. Kagwe, EGH, commended MTRH Board, Staff and Management for having continued to offer exemplary services, even during the peaks of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He congratulated MTRH for excelling in its Mandate. Through the last five annual Performance Contracts, MTRH has remained at the top in the Performance Management System within the Ministry of Health and amongst all State Corporations across all Ministries.

He added that the success of MTRH is a reflection of medical success story in the country which should be emulated by other institutions.
Sen. Kagwe, EGH, said that the Ministry of Health is working to establish an International Mental Health Hospital in Karen, Nairobi, to expand mental health capacity in Kenya and beyond.

The CS also lauded MTRH for successfully completing all projects on a timely basis and regularly inspecting the ongoing works thus ensuring quality workmanship. He added that this contributes to a positive image of government and public service.
Speaking on behalf of the Board Chair, Mr. Alois Nderi expressed gratitude to CS Health for continued support extended to MTRH over the years.
On his part, MTRH CEO Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, observed that MTRH staff have ingrained the Quality Culture, Capacity Development and Continual Improvement.
The CS acclaimed the hospital for the recently commissioned multi-million shillings National Government projects which, besides enhancing service delivery, have led to new and improved service streams--a path towards sustainability.
The projects include the largest hospital-based oxygen generating plant producing 2,000 litres of oxygen per minute, Chandaria Cancer and Chronic Diseases Centre, radiotherapy and brachytherapy cancer machines, and the Nawiri Recovery & Skills Centre for mental health rehabilitation.
He urged other public health facilities to benchmark on MTRH which has made significant investments in the area of medical informatics, Information & Communication Technology (ICT) through ultra-modern data centre, network infrastructure, high definition CCTV and telemedicine facilities for quality multi-specialty patient care, trainings, research and policy formulation both in Kenya and beyond.
The CS challenged parastatals under the Ministry of Health to diversify their range of services instead of increasing user fees giving an example of MTRH which has introduced new multi-specialty health services and new courses at MTRH College of Health Sciences such as: physician training, ophthalmology, ear, nose & throat, neurosurgery, and College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) Courses.
