Leaders from National Institutes of Health visit AMPATH Partnership in Kenya

Visitors from the National Institutes of Health toured the rural health clinic in Mosoriot, Kenya.

Earlier this month, the AMPATH partnership hosted leaders from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) including the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, the Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the Director of the Fogarty International Center, along with their teams and key leadership from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). During their visit, these leaders learned more about the AMPATH partnership’s commitment to care, research, and education.

The NIH delegation visited one of the AMPATH rural health centers in Mosoriot, where they had a tour led by Dr. Joe Mamlin and Dr. Sylvester Kimaiyo and were able to see first-hand how the pediatric HIV research program evaluates and combats challenges for children growing up with HIV, including adherence to medicines and HIV disclosure. At the Moi University School of Medicine and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, they took a comprehensive tour that showed them the diverse clinical programs in action, while highlighting how researchers across the health spectrum are working in these settings to generate evidence that improves health care.

With the NIH site visits, key leaders from the NIH have the opportunity to see first-hand how their Institute’s funding and support make possible research that changes health care both locally and around the globe. They also get to know the site’s capacity for conducting research and who the key partners and researchers at each site might be. With this visit to Kenya, the Fogarty Institute was also celebrating their funding of 30 years of research and training in Kenya.
