The story of AMPATH’s first financial supporter

More than 25 years ago, one Indianapolis philathropist, Marty Moore, heard about the global health vision of four Indiana University faculty members and fronted the funds for them to explore a potential partnership with a medical school in Africa or Asia. Because of that funding, the Indiana University-Moi University School of Medicine/Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital partnership took flight, eventually becoming AMPATH. Last month, Marty and the AMPATH program were presented with the Celebrating American Ideas Award by the Sagamore Institute. The award honors those who inspire Hoosiers by putting their vision to work. (Marty is pictured below at the awards ceremony with Jim Morris, Bob Einterz, and Daniel Ochieng who was the first Kenyan to recieve the anti-retroviral treatment in 2001.)
