Leading With Care: Update on HIV Programming 2/27/25
Over the last several weeks, while faced with unprecedented challenges, continuity of care for our patients living with HIV and the most vulnerable Kenyans has been our primary concern.
The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), administered by USAID, is a tremendous success story of how we can work together to solve tough problems. In Kenya, where over 1.4 million people live with HIV, PEPFAR’s support has reduced new infections by 78% and AIDS-related deaths by 57%.
The situation continues to evolve, but here is what we know:
Currently, 127,000+ people living with HIV in Kenya receive care from AMPATH partners through PEPFAR.
In accordance with a US Government waiver for PEPFAR, about 70% of AMPATH’s USAID-funded workforce is back to providing direct patient HIV care.
AMPATH leaders are working to identify the most critical needs and to design and implement models that integrate HIV care into Government of Kenya-supported primary care and chronic disease care structures.
The USAID 4TheChild program which provided programs for orphans and vulnerable children and their caregivers and the DREAMS program for adolescent girls and young women has received a termination notice.
We estimate AMPATH will need $5 million in 2025. Philanthropic support will fill gaps in care and treatment, programming for orphans and vulnerable children, continuation of gender-based violence programs and help provide a bridge as we continue work to incorporate HIV care into sustainable, government primary care systems. Monthly giving or multi-year commitments will help us sustainably plan for the uncertain future.
Meet Daniel Ochieng, AMPATH’s 1st HIV Patient
In 2000, at the dawn of our HIV care program, Daniel Ochieng, a Moi medical student wasting away from HIV, came back to life because of an individual donor’s generosity to provide HIV medicine. Daniel promised Dr. Joe Mamlin that he would help other people living with HIV. He has kept that promise by working with AMPATH to combat stigma for more than 20 years. Daniel is one of more than 127,000 people living with HIV who receive care from AMPATH partners through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), administered by USAID.
